A few simple steps to keeping your memory in good shape…

[11 January 2010 - 14h39]

Exercise is good for our cardiovascular system – and it’s also good for the mind! It has been found that for women aged 70 and over, an hour and a half spent walking each week increases cognitive performance and wards off degenerative diseases.

So ladies – let’s get walking! Because, according to a study by Jennifer Weuve of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, verbal memory, attention and concentration are all considerably improved by exercise. Working with her team she closely monitored 20,000 women between the ages of 70 and 81 and came to this conclusion.

There’s no need to run or even to walk briskly in order to preserve cognitive function. With just an hour and a half a week spent walking, women aged 70 and over saw their risk of cognitive decline reduced by 20% compared with those who spent less than ten minutes on this sort of exercise. Which is definitely excellent news as finding a way of walking for an hour and a half each week is hardly rocket science!
