A new weapon in the fight against resistant head lice
Have head lice finally met their match? According to a French study, ivermectin, an anti-parasite medication used for dozens of years against river blindness (onchocerciasis), and more recently against scabies, offers an alternative treatment that is effective in 95% of cases. Which could mean that the resistance of these repulsive creatures is at an end once and for all.
Researchers carried out a study involving 812 children infected with head lice. They compared the effect of ivermectin with that of a traditional malathion-based anti-parasite treatment. A fortnight after the start of the treatment, based on two oral doses of ivermectin at one-week intervals, 95% of those treated were free from head lice. Using the traditional treatment, however, results were no higher than 85%. Therefore this option is particularly useful in cases where the traditional treatment against head lice is no longer effective.
