A vaccine against malaria by 2025?
A report published by the main world health organizations calls for joint action to develop a vaccine to combat malaria. The aim is to market the vaccine by the year 2025.
The new “malaria vaccine technology road map” was launched in Bangkok at the Global Vaccine Research Forum. It is not simply a piece of paper: over 230 experts representing 100 organisations in 35 countries took part for two years in drafting this “road map”.
The road map lists eleven priorities in four major areas of work: research, vaccine development, clinical trial capacity in Africa, and policy and commercialisation. “More exchanges of information and cooperation are needed in order to exploit research better and to rule out pointless work”, underlined Dr Melina Moree from the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative. All eyes are now turned to 2025…
