ASAQ – a new antimalarial approved by the WHO

[28 November 2008 - 11h33]

Good news: the antimalarial drug ASAQ has been put on the WHO’s “pre-approved” drug list. This approval is aimed at facilitating the distribution of this unique new drug which is unpatented and sold on a no profit no loss basis.

ASAQ is a first in many ways. It is the first fixed-dose combination of artesunate and amodiaquine complying with WHO recommendations. It is also the first antimalarial drug available in paediatric form, which is something to be welcomed. Of the million people worldwide who succumb to the disease each year, more than half are in fact children…

Produced by the French pharmaceutical company sanofi-aventis, ASAQ is the product of cooperation with the international Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative. Three million treatments have already been distributed to date in the 21 African countries where the product has been registered.
