Abortions which end in hospital...

An article in the Lancet raises the alarm: every year throughout the world, five million women are hospitalised following a non-medicalised abortion, thus one conducted under poor health conditions. Dr Susheela Singh from New York, conducted her study in thirteen countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The selection of countries was no accident. “Almost all non-medicalised abortions occur in developing countries”, she explains.
The rates of hospitalisation for abortions varied from 3 per 1000 in Bangladesh to 15 per 1000 in countries such as Egypt and Uganda where the health infrastructure is much more developed. “Women are paying a heavy price for non-medicalised abortions”, continues the author of the study, emphasising the promotion of contraception to prevent undesired pregnancies. “This objective must become a public health priority in developing countries”, she says. According to the World Health Organization, 100,000 maternal deaths could be prevented each year if women used contraception.
