Action to improve lifestyle choices? Not as easy as one might think…

Diet, exercise, smoking… Can action to promote a healthier lifestyle really be effective on a community or country level? The results of a study conducted in the Islamic Republic of Iran appear mixed, to say the least.
Dr Nizal Sarrafzadegan and his colleagues at the cardiovascular disease research centre in Isphahan conducted a study in two regions of the country: Isphahan and Najaf-Abad. For 4 years they worked with the local population, providing them with advice on diet, exercise and how to quit smoking. Another cohort living in a neighbouring region (Arak) acted as a control group.
It appears that these actions did have a positive impact – although relatively small – in terms of dietary choices. On the other hand, smoking decreased more in the control group than in the areas that were being monitored! And as for the energy expenditure associated with exercise… this fell in all three areas.
The authors therefore focus principally to the benefits achieved in terms of healthy eating. According to their study, these advantages can lead to a notable reduction in chronic disease if the advice provided is followed by the entire population. In theory at least.
