Alcoholism and behavioural problems – a highly “sexual” combination

[3 December 2007 - 10h20]
[mis à jour le 3 December 2007 à 14h19]

Young alcoholics who suffer from behavioural problems are likely to have an over-active sex life… to say the least. With an average of more than ten sexual partners at the same time, these young adults are breaking all records! A new American study focuses on this issue.

Patricia a. Cavazos-Regh and her team at the Washington University School of Medicine interviewed 601 Americans aged 18 to 25 who were suffering from some degree of alcohol dependency. Their mental state, family status and the number of their sexual partners were also noted. The aim was to see if there was a link between alcoholism, behavioural problems and sexual hyperactivity.

The result was truly staggering. According to the researchers, “of the 601 young people involved, 45% stated that they had at least 10 different sexual partners, simultaneously”. However, their report does not explain what mechanism might drive young alcoholics with behavioural problems to such excesses.

Whatever the case, the researchers point out the many risks associated with this “sexual bulimia”: “By having large numbers of partners, (these) young people are at particular risk of sexually transmissible diseases such as HIV/AIDS. And conversely, if they themselves are already affected, they in turn risk infecting their partners”…
