Allergic? Try desensitisation – it really works!
Allergy sufferers of all kinds open wide… or at least pay attention – desensitisation really does work! Contrary to die-hard received opinion, specific immunotherapy (SIT) can bring patients long-term relief and reduce the risk of asthma. A new European study has in fact just confirmed it.
For three years, 147 young adults aged between 16 and 25 who suffered from allergy to grass or birch pollen underwent SIT treatment by injection (using standardised allergenic extracts). The group was then monitored for 10 years and the results were compared with those of a “non-desensitised” control group.
According to the researchers, the results show that there was a “significant improvement in rhino-conjunctivitis and conjunctivitis in the “desensitised” group. Better still, this improvement “persisted during the 10 years of monitoring with a preventive effect on asthma of up to 7 years after treatment. It should be remembered that asthma is the major complication associated with pollen allergy.
