Allergies – be careful what touches your mouth…

Do your lips sometimes swell up and itch?

It’s almost certainly due to a food allergy. But perhaps you haven’t eaten anything likely to cause it… But there again, maybe you have! Perhaps somebody gave you a kiss? That’s right – food allergens can be transmitted by kissing, whether on the lips or on the cheek. This happens when the person kissed develops an allergy to a food eaten by the person who kisses them. According to an American study, this appears to be a lot more common than we realise.

So which foods are to blame? Pecan nuts, peanuts, pistachios and fish can all lead to urticaria (hives), oedema (fluid retention) and respiratory problems – in fact allergic reactions can even put the victim’s life at risk. So be careful. Around 10% of cases of allergic shock are food based. And if you suffer from severe allergies be sure to speak to your partner about it… before you start kissing.
