An active brain will help keep Alzheimer’s at bay

[28 June 2007 - 12h03]
[mis à jour le 29 June 2007 à 15h07]

A word of advice to any senior citizens – read the paper, play a game of chess or cards. In short, keep those those neurons busy! Like any muscle, our brain too needs exercise, if only to stave off the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

In the journal Neurology, Professor Robert Wilson and his team in Chicago have confirmed the benefits to be gained from activities such as reading or playing board games.

They conducted a study of 700 individuals with an average age of 80, monitoring them over the course of 5 years. The results show that an elderly person who is “active” has a 2.6 lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than one who participates in almost no intellectually stimulating activities. Yet it’s just a matter of reading the newspaper from time to time, or playing some board games or games of cards.
