An underwater worker dies in an industrial accident every two years!

It takes a special sort of person to work underwater in the Building and Public Works sector. When it comes to inspecting bridges, dams and underwater pipework, it’s a job for professional divers. They work in extreme conditions and their mortality rate is 10 times higher than the rest of those working in this sector.

In France there are only about a thousand underwater workers. Working under water and very often in the dark, they are exposed to all the same dangers that face other workers in the industry, such as fractures or crushed or severed limbs.

But they also develop “diver’s disease” – a form of osteonecrosis of the major joints, which is the gradual death of bony cell tissue due to the suspension of blood circulation in segments of bone. This disabling condition seriously affects their health. And nowadays, in France, one diver dies every 2 years as a result of an industrial accident! Which is an enormous number given that the active workforce is just 1,000. Very few underwater workers are still diving after the age of 55…
