Are allergies to medicine really caused by a virus?

Allergic reaction to medication? This may in fact be a reaction by your body’s immune defences, as a team at INSERM (France’s National Institute for Health and Medical Research) recently discovered. When confronted by the reactivation of a dormant virus, some organisms protect themselves by an allergic type reaction.
The Epstein Barr Virus is a virus belonging to the herpes family. It is particularly known for its involvement in infectious mononucleosis. According to one study, it appears to be the cause of so-called “medicine allergies”. In fact, these are the result of an immune response by our body to this dormant virus.
The researchers monitored 40 patients with symptoms of cutaneous and visceral allergy. All these patients were on a course of either antibiotic or anti-epileptic treatments. And 76% of them showed an abnormal increase in the virus…
