Are you a cigar smoker? Watch out for your heart…
Smoking cigars increases the risk of premature death from heart disease.
This piece of bad news comes from a study conducted in the United States, involving over 120,000 individuals, all male and aged 30 or over. They were monitored over the course of 10 years.
Those studied had been very carefully selected: none had ever smoked a pipe or cigarettes. None was suffering from heart problems or diabetes at the time of inclusion in the study and, as a general rule, all these smokers were in a good state of health at that time. The incidence of deaths caused by heart problems was measured using death certificate information, and in total 2,508 cases were recorded during the reference period.
According to the researchers, there was a clear link between being a cigar smoker and the risk of premature death among young smokers and, most importantly, among those who continued to smoke. Their level of risk was 1.3 times higher than that of the general population. However, no increase was observed among smokers over the age of 75, nor among past smokers, regardless of their age.
