Are your spectacles dirty? Or is it your eyes that are the problem?

Spectacles are expensive – we all know that… but that’s no reason automatically to wait a year after getting your last pair of glasses before having another check-up. Especially if you suddenly feel that your glasses are no longer doing their job properly.

If your vision is blurred or you keep feeling the need to clean your lenses – even when they’re spotless – you may be having eye accommodation problems.

If you have the impression that your field of vision is diminishing although you haven’t changed the size of your lenses, or if certain moving objects go out of sight and then reappear, this can be a sign that you have small lesions of the optic nerve. These can lead to the development of scotomas: blind spots in the field of vision that are often a sign of chronic glaucoma.

In either case, you will need an ophthalmologist to carry out the necessary examinations and establish whether there is any cause for concern. It will only take a few minutes to put your mind at rest or to sort out treatment which, if followed over the long term, will stop the problem progressing. And if your check-up doesn’t throw up any problems, your ophthalmologist won’t mind at all. So don’t hesitate to go and see him.
