Asthma sufferers beware…

Asthma often begins at home. According to a Finnish study, dampness and mould in the home can play a part in the development of asthma in some children.
In fact, one in every five cases of infantile asthma is thought to originate in the home. Noticeable signs of damp, and mould visible to the naked eye have been found two to three times more often in rooms where young asthmatics were living than in those occupied by children in the control group. What’s more, problems with damp only aggravate existing asthma.
The explanation for this remains unclear. Reactions of an immunological nature – yet to be clarified – could be implicated. The study’s author reminds us of the importance of more careful building design along with good construction practice. He also stresses the need to maintain accommodation properly in order to avoid damage from damp.
