Cancers: a heavy toll paid to infections...
According to an American study, one cancer patient in ten dies from serious infection, or a total of 46,000 patients per year in a country such as the United States. The two most affected organs are the lungs and the kidneys.
Dr. Mark Williams and his colleagues in Pennsylvania discovered that patients who suffer from "severe" infections present a five times greater risk of premature death than others. Patients with the greatest risk are those with lymphoma, leukaemia or any other blood cancer. It seems logical, considering the role that lymphocytes -white blood cells- play in the immune system.
The culprit? a fragile immune system which is no longer able to fight infections. "Our study shows not only the devastating effects of infections in these patients, but also their overall impact on public health " explains the author. Every year, in a country such as the United States, infections cost approximately 3 billion dollars and multiply hospitalisation times by three. Source : Critical Care, July 4, 2004
