Cervical cancer: a clear round for Gardasil
[mis à jour le 23 November 2006 à 14h53]
Gardasil, the potential vaccine for cervical cancer produced by Merck & Co, has passed its examination. A new analysis of a phase II clinical trial carried out over five years showed that it provided 100% protection for the women vaccinated.
Even for those who had already been exposed to the papillomavirus before vaccination. This virus causes up to 70% of cervical cancers! These preliminary results were presented recently at the International Congress, Eurogin 2006, in Paris. The random double-blind study with placebo covered 552 women aged between 16 and 23 years.
“These are very interesting results. They provide new arguments in favour of vaccinating teenagers and young women”, said Dr Luiza Villa.
Gardasil is one of the two first candidate vaccines – with Cervarix, produced by the GSK laboratories – against cervical cancer. This long-awaited vaccine should provide protection against human papillomavirus infections (HPV) of type 6, 11, 16 and 18. It should also protect against the development of genital warts, condyloma acuminata. Source: Sanofi Pasteur MSD, 26 April 2006
