Cigarette smoke stops you breathing properly

Cigarette smoke stops you breathing properly

One smoker in every two will die from his habit! Smoking reduces respiratory capacity, even when we’re resting.

And when smoke passes along our respiratory tract, acetone and tar damage the mucous membrane. These two toxic substances also make us cough of course, and cause inflammation of the bronchial tubes. And nicotine, for its part, causes a violent contraction of the respiratory tract with each inhalation and affects the functioning of the pulmonary alveoli.

And that’s not all… The carbon monoxide given off by combustion combines with the haemoglobin in the blood, preventing it from transporting oxygen efficiently. Suddenly, we experience oxygen shortage and consequently the lungs function less efficiently. Together, the effects of smoking lead to an increase in resting respiratory rate … and make us breathless more quickly when we’re active.
