Cocaine on... banknotes!
Cocaine alert in the United States! It appears that nine banknotes in every ten circulating on the other side of the Atlantic carry traces of the white powder. This is the unexpected finding made by a team of American researchers who examined thousands of bank notes from 5 countries: Brazil, Canada, China, the United States and Japan.
If you have recently made a trip to the States, you probably have traces of cocaine in your wallet or your pocket, the researchers point out in all seriousness. Especially if you visited Detroit, Baltimore, Boston or Washington DC. In these areas, over 95% of the banknotes in circulation are in fact “contaminated”.
Naturally, the author of the report considers these results to be alarming. In the United States it is a wide-scale phenomenon. This is also true of Canada where cocaine was identified on 85% of the banknotes examined. However, the level is lower in countries such as China and Japan where “only” 15% and 20% of banknotes respectively carry traces of the drug.
So… is there any health risk to people who have tainted banknotes in their possession? Absolutely not. The amounts found are miniscule, we are glad to report.
