Contact lenses – keeping an eye on our eyes …

[13 April 2010 - 09h25]

“Contact lenses are not consumer products”, the SNOF (National Union of Ophthalmologists of France) reminds us.

Indeed, a study carried out by the ophthalmology department at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris shows that 3% to 4% of ophthalmological emergencies relate to contact lens wearers. The reason? Lack of good hygiene and failure to follow the rules for contact lens use.

To avoid any complications there are a number of recommendations that must be scrupulously followed: washing your hands with soap and water before handling the lenses, cleaning them with a suitable product and removing them before sleeping. There are many risks involved: eye irritations, allergies to cleaning products, corneal ulcers and even abscesses. The SNOF underlines in particular the fact that the prescribing of contact lenses is a “medical act” and that regular monitoring is “strongly recommended”. Moreover, “the choice and adjustment of lenses, and their cleaning products, falls strictly within the domain of the ophthalmologist”.
