Could depression be an early sign of Parkinson’s Disease?

According to an American study, certain depressive disorders could be forerunner signs of Parkinson’s Disease. This is the conclusion reached by comparing patients being treated with antidepressants with others not under this type of treatment.

According to Professor Miguel Hernan of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, “a year prior to diagnosis with Parkinson’s Disease, the individuals being treated for depression in fact showed twice the risk of developing the disease than members of the control group”. However, he points out that these results do not mean that antidepressants are the cause of Parkinson’s Disease. “We believe (on the contrary) that depressive disorders could be considered as early signs of Parkinson’s Disease”.
