Could turmeric help to combat Alzheimer’s disease?
American researchers have isolated a chemical component found in turmeric (one of the basic constituents of curry) that appears to have beneficial effects for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Known as bisdemethoxy curcumin, it appears to destroy the beta-amyloid plaques whose presence is a marker for the disease.
In fact, this substance appears to “boost” certain immune cells – macrophages – which in turn appear to “clean” the amyloid plaques. To reach this conclusion, the researchers used blood samples taken from patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. All this of course is simply basic research. Further studies will be needed before this theory can be confirmed … or denied.
