Good health does not simply depend on vaccinations and medication. We also have our part to play! A good combination of a balanced diet, exercise and good hygiene is essential for staying fit and healthy.
Making sure you eat a good diet can in itself help to prevent a number of illnesses, including certain types of cancer. For example, eating at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables regularly every day is beneficial to our cardiovascular system. And fruit and vegetables provide us with plenty of vitamins, minerals and micronutrients too. Eat olive oil, garlic and parsley but also fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These unsaturated fatty acids increase the levels of “good” (HDL) cholesterol in our blood.
Exercise is very important too. You don’t need to get competitive, just “getting active” will help to make a difference. Half an hour a day is enough. Of course, giving up smoking is absolutely essential.
And good bodily hygiene is, of course, vital to living a healthy life. And the first “health” essential is good hand hygiene! To keep bacteria at bay, make sure you wash your hands with both soap and water several times a day:
after going to the toilet;
after taking care of your child;
before preparing meals and each time you change from handling one foodstuff to another;
and of course … before eating.
