Do you suffer with a dry or very dry mouth?
Having a dry mouth, usually caused by insufficient secretion of saliva, can sometimes be associated with medication. There are certain types of medication that need to be watched. These include psychotropic drugs, analgesics (pain relief), opiates, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and antihistamines used to treat allergies. Dry mouth can also follow consumption of irritant substances such as tobacco and alcohol.
If medication is to blame, your doctor may be able to replace one form with another. However, he will also insist that you follow a few simple steps to help alleviate the problem, such as drinking more water (at least a litre and a half per day), or chewing (sugar-free) gum. These are both goods ways of stimulating saliva production.
