Does testosterone treatment really put the prostate at risk?
According to an American study, administering testosterone does not present a danger to the prostate gland. This is really good news for millions of men who, as they grow older, see their hormone production decline. A drop in testosterone in men can indeed present a genuine problem.
Testosterone plays a part in numerous functions, sexuality and libido in particular. To compensate for this shortfall, a substitutive treatment involving the administration of testosterone is sometimes used.
However, many studies had shown that this type of treatment could encourage the development of prostate cancer. But according to the study conducted by Professor Leonard Marks of the University of California, Los Angeles, this form of treatment does not present a risk. “We observed no change in the prostate tissue of the 22 men taking part in our trial”. Men who, over the course of a year and a half, received a daily dose of testosterone. In the author’s opinion, “a study taking place over a number of years would appear to be necessary to guarantee that these treatments are harmless”.
