Dos and don’ts of exercising after giving birth

If you’ve recently given birth, getting back into exercise must be gentle … and gradual. In fact, before getting back into any sporting activity you should wait for 8 to 10 weeks after the birth. Your doctor will be able to advise you about any possible factors you might need to take into account so be sure to follow your GP’s recommendations.

Before going back to running you should wait for at least 3 months. But breastfeeding shouldn’t pose any obstacle to exercise. In fact, new benefits of breastfeeding are still being discovered! Researchers in the Netherlands recently showed that the longer a woman continues to breastfeed exclusively, the lower the risk is of her child developing asthma!

The researchers studied the effect of breastfeeding and the gradual introduction of other foods, both solid and liquid, on the health of 5,000 children.

Their results showed that children who had never been breastfed had an increased risk of wheezing, breathlessness and of a persistent dry or loose cough during the first 4 years of their life. This was compared with children who were breastfed for more than 6 months.

The message is clear: the optimum length of time for which a mother should breastfeeding exclusively is a minimum of 6 months… which corresponds exactly with WHO recommendations.
