Drugs and video games… both forms of addiction?
More and more young French people are seeking help from their doctors about their addiction … to computer games! It’s a serious problem. Players find themselves “hooked” on the joystick in the same way that other people are hooked on psycho active substances.
Professor Jean-Luc Venisse, head of the addictology department at the University Hospital of Nantes is emphatic. “Requests for help and care from older adolescents and young adults are more regular and more frequent.” They are finding themselves locked into addictive patterns of behaviour that are incompatible with their everyday lives.
The result is that their lives become a nightmare. Hence the idea of making the “ambulatory intensive care units” initially designed to help with “traditional” addictions such as psycho active drug consumption, anorexia, bulimia, etc, available to these new patients. The message is … don’t get glued to your screen. And for parents of young children, read the information on games consoles carefully. It will serve as a reminder that video games can provoke epileptic attacks. Prudence is most definitely needed.
