Eat fish when you are pregnant to combat asthma!

[15 June 2004 - 00h00]

Ladies, did you know that the fact of eating certain fish during your pregnancy can protect your child against asthma? This is true in particular of the so-called "oily" fish such as salmon and sardines.

Dr Franck Gilliland, at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, has in fact discovered that children whose mothers ate this type of fish have 71% less risk of developing asthma than the others!

However, Gilliland wages war on breaded fish! This in fact increases the risk of asthma if the mother eats it during pregnancy. "These observations are particularly important for families with a history of asthma", he concludes. So if you are looking for oily fish, rich in the famous omega 3, go for salmon, sardines, mackerel, red tuna, trout or even herring.
