Enjoy summer with bright, glossy lips!

[28 July 2011 - 16h46]

Summer has well and truly arrived and you may well be thinking about putting some colour on your lips. But think first about protecting them … against the sun in particular and against dehydration.

The skin on the lips does not contain sebaceous glands, so your lips are always at risk of becoming dry, particularly as the epidermis here is very fine and especially sensitive to external attack … from heat, sand, sea salt and, of course, the sun. So make sure you use plenty of moisturiser.

Just like the rest of your skin, your lips should not be exposed to the rays of the sun for too long, so choose a moisturising stick that gives full protection against UV. These days, some lipsticks and coloured lip balms incorporate this “function”.

Sunlight can also trigger an outbreak of labial herpes, otherwise known as cold sores. If these occur, avoid using makeup completely. This is because the virus can spread to the tube and then contaminate its contents. To avoid such unwelcome occurrences, make sure you give your lips all the protection they need.

When it comes to fashion, this summer you can go for hotter, brighter colours: orange or coral, for example, will look great against a lightly tanned skin. And if you prefer pink, you’re in luck. The trend is for the candy pink we loved when we were children … in all its forms.
