Erectile dysfunction: French women are not well informed
Three French women in four consider sexuality to be an important aspect of the well-being and stability of their relationship. But almost one in five admits that her partner has suffered at least one episode of erectile dysfunction over the course of the last twelve months.
These results come from an extensive international survey involving 14,000 women aged 18 and over, in 14 different countries. As Dr Marie-Hélène Colson, Director of Sexology Education at the Marseilles and Montpellier Faculties of Medicine, points out, “this study reveals that below the age of 35 women favour communication and taking an active attitude to sexual problems. Beyond the age of 50, however, they seem more reserved about discussing this with their partner and also poorly informed about the therapeutic options available”.
In fact, almost one woman in two states that she has never heard of medication specifically for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The majority also complain about the lack of information, which is felt to be more harmful still as the problem can seriously affect a couple’s relationship.
By contrast, in Latin America 85% of women know of the existence of these treatments. And the majority (56%) acknowledge their effectiveness, whereas in France they are not really considered as medication in their own right but are destined for use as treatments for actual diseases.
