Exercising without joint problems…

So you’ve decided to get some exercise? An excellent idea! Why not try swimming or cycling rather than running, especially if you’re planning a moderate level of exercise. Your joints will thank you for it…

This is what a team of American researchers have recommended after studying 236 men and women between the ages of 45 and 55. None had any history of joint pain in the knee and all were of normal weight.

The participants in the study were divided into three groups according to whether they were taking up a low, medium or high level of exercise, and were monitored over a number of weeks. At the end of the study, all were given an MRI scan of the knees.

Unsurprisingly, the incidence of cartilage lesions increased in line with the intensity of the exercise. Which is why swimming, cycling and indeed walking are recommended. These forms of exercise do not involve sudden movement and impact and thus reduce the risk of joint damage. If you really want to take up running, do so in moderation and, above all, choose a suitable form of footwear. Specialist shops will be able to advise you. And if you can, try running in bare feet …
