Extra sport for children – how much longer must we wait?

[15 January 2008 - 14h11]

Get your children moving! According to an American study it really is the solution to preventing obesity in adult life. Which is hardly surprising as taking part in sport outside of (and in addition to) the school curriculum leads to an even greater reduction in the risk of being overweight or obese.

Between 1996 and 2002, Dr David Menschik and his team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, studied the weight development of children aged from 8 to 12 at the start of the study. Each participant was asked to record the frequency with which they took part in physical activity.

The authors found that one PE session 5 times a week at school led to a 28% reduction in the risk of obesity! And if the youngster took part in other sports in addition to exercise at school, his or her risk was reduced by 48%! These figures are an excellent illustration of the need to put in place national programmes of extra-curricular physical exercise. But also to increase the number of hours of sport and PE taught in school . This was done in a Swedish experiment already reported by Destination Santé and demonstrated the advantages of such a measure for the development of healthy bones in children.
