False nails – cover-ups that could prove dangerous…

Do you have fragile, brittle nails? It’s a great temptation to cover them up. Especially these days when so many attractive false nails are available. But there’s another side to every story and these cover-ups have their downside too: there’s a danger that they could destroy your real nails…

Catherine Oliveres-Ghouti, a member of the French Society of Dermatologists has raised concerns about the glue used to attach false nails because this glue is applied to your real nails. It is extremely toxic and comes into direct contact with keratin, the hard protein of which nails are made, she points out. And keratin is a living substance.

In most cases keratin is unable to withstand these glues. The nails become more fragile and begin to crumble as if they have been eaten away. For Dr Oliveres-Ghouti the solution is both simple yet radical: no more using false nails!

However, she has considered the plight of young brides whose nails are a disaster! She accepts that in certain circumstances, such as your wedding day, they can be used. But false nails should not be left on for more than a week. Instead of the one or two months that is often the case. And if your fragile, brittle nails are really causing you grief, try talking to your dermatologist about it.
