Food supplements … maybe – but not just any old how ...

[29 July 2010 - 15h55]

Are food supplements really useful and, most importantly, are they harmless? The answer forthcoming from the AFDN (the French Association of Nutritionist Dieticians) is “yes, but …” The Association also has a few commonsense recommendations to pass on.

“Food supplements are not a form of medication but a foodstuff, which does not mean that they are harmless”, AFDN leaders remind us. In other words, supplements must not be used as a replacement for medical treatment.

The nutritionists and dieticians also seek to alert consumers to the danger of “overdosing” that can occur when people self supplement. They stress too the dangers associated with purchasing products on the internet.

“Food supplements are not dangerous: they can be effective and useful, providing one knows to whom, when and how to recommend them”, the AFDN concludes. Before deciding to use supplements yourself, seek advice from a specialist – either a dietician or nutritionist.
