For your lungs, one cannabis joint is equivalent to 5 cigarettes!

[12 September 2007 - 12h17]

Smoking one single cannabis joint appears to have the same effect on the respiratory system as the successive consumption of … 2½ to 5 cigarettes. In fact, the smoke from this drug in itself seems to prevent the lungs functioning normally.

Professor Richard Beasley (Medical Research Institute, New Zealand) conducted respiratory tests on 339 individuals. Of these, 75 smoked only cannabis, 92 only tobacco, 91 both substances and 81 did not have any addiction.

All the participants underwent various tests to assess their respiratory health. “The cannabis smokers suffer more from coughing, wheezing and bronchial obstruction. Furthermore, cannabis causes greater damage to the lungs, forcing them to function more actively.” The effects, of course, are even more severe among those who are poly-intoxicated.
