From mouse to … MAR!
An international research team has just discovered the physiological mechanism governing the selection of sperm … though only in mice. It has been found that the gametes of male rodents use an enzyme to eliminate defective sperm.
The authors of the report explain “that after entering the female’s genital tract, and as part of their maturation process, certain sperm will release this enzyme which prevents fusion with an oocyte”. The result is that only the good sperm remain in the running, producing a better fertilization rate and this will also lead to a lower percentage of abnormal births.
The researchers are now going to investigate the effectiveness of sperm treatment in humans. This offers hope to couples who at present have to turn to MAR (medically assisted reproduction) methods. If applied to man, this physiological process could reduce the number of failures and risk of malformation.
