Ginkgo biloba – the good news and the bad…

There is still a lot of talk about Ginkgo biloba. As a medicinal plant it is claimed to be particularly effective against memory problems in later life! The only drawback, and it’s a considerable one, is that it appears to increase the risk of stroke (cerebral vascular accident or CVA).

So this plant, which is native to Asia, is continuing to stir up controversy. Already, the benefits it was supposed to offer in the treatment of tinnitus have been blown out of the water following the publication of several studies on the subject. In the case in hand, a team of American researchers worked with a cohort of 118 individuals over the age of 85.

Half were given doses of Ginkgo biloba three times a day for three years. The other participants received a placebo. The good news is that the authors discovered that among the group treated, there was a 70% reduction in memory problems. A pretty good result. However, of the 59 individuals in this group, 7 suffered a stroke compared with… none at all in the other group. Which is bad news for Ginkgo. Making this yet another study showing that natural is not always synonymous with risk-free…
