Green vegetables can help fight diabetes!

Popeye ate spinach to make him stronger … but he could also have been protecting himself against diabetes without even knowing it! It appears that spinach, like all green leafy vegetables, helps to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

By comparing different studies, a team of British researchers showed that eating an extra portion and a half of green leafy vegetables each day is enough to reduce this risk by 14%. In fact, the researchers believe that fruit and vegetables can help prevent chronic diseases because of their high antioxidant content.

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, chard, cabbage and sorrel could also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, mainly because of their high magnesium content. However, the researchers add that the results prove that the foodstuff in itself is far more important than any constituent taken in isolation. And they remain cautious given the limited number of studies available. Whatever the case, all the studies currently published do at least demonstrate that such foods are entirely harmless…
