H5N1 - a global vaccine reserve is under way
The World Health Organisation (the WHO) has decided to enter into arrangements with vaccine manufacturers “to forge ahead and create a global vaccine reserve against the H5N1 avian flu virus”.
This announcement follows the request made to the WHO by the World Health Assembly concerning the building up of strategic stocks. The WHO was also pleased “with the announcement made by GlaxoSmithKline which is going to contribute to the building up of (this) global reserve”. The Hungarian firm Omnivest, Baxter and Sanofi-Pasteur have also made known their intention to work in this direction.
Margaret Chan, WHO Director General, sees these undertakings as progress towards “the creation of a global resource to help the whole world, and particularly the developing countries, in the event of a major outbreak of avian flu due to the H5N1 virus”.
