Hair dye and bladder cancer: a link that kills?
The European Bureau of Consumer Unions (BEUC) is concerned about a possible link between the use of hair dye and the increase in bladder cancer. And it is calling for more transparency from industrialists.
“More and more people are using permanent dyes for hair and using them quite frequently. According to an American study, consumers who regularly dye their hair have a greater risk of contracting bladder cancer”, states the BEU in its latest publication. A potential risk for consumers but also for professionals, hairdressers and even shampoo girls!
Moreover, BEUC goes on to say that “the cosmetics industry has not yet given free access to all the data it has”. This situation is now changing. The Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products (SCCPNFP) has asked the European Commission to take steps to assess the safety and potential risks of hair dyes. It also wants the Commission to have access to all the data, and to complete the evaluation of all hair dyes within two years.
BEUC in turn is calling on the European Commission to “implement an evaluation strategy for these products as soon as possible”. Until then, your only ally is the precautionary principle. So why not go for the natural look, because after all, you are worth it, aren’t you? To find out more, consult www.beuc.org
