Health Canada warns against online drug purchasing
[3 March 2010 - 10h23]

The Canadian health ministry, Health Canada, has issued a warning about a list of potentially dangerous products – drugs and food supplements – available on the internet.

It is warning consumers about the following products :

- 65 body building products sold by Bodybuilding.com. These may contain anabolic steroids and pose serious health risks such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), cerebrovascular accident (stroke), liver problems, anxiety, irritability, etc.
- Some batches of food supplements that are meant to improve sexual performance, sold by Atlas Operations Inc. These products contain “an unauthorised substance similar to sildenafil” – the active principle of those famous little blue pills (editor’s note). However, this type of product cannot be used without medical supervision because of the cardiac risk to some patients;
- The unauthorised product Tian Yang Xu Huo Oral Ulcer Capsule® which contains aristolochic acid. This natural toxin has been implicated in cases of serious renal insufficiency and several types of cancer;
- The unauthorised product STRO Emperor Capsules® which, though it does not mention it, contains tadalafil. This is in fact the active principle in another drug used to treat erectile dysfunction;
- The unapproved product 2H & 2D® as this too contains tadalafil.

None of these products has been authorised for sale in Canada. However, Health Canada is warning people against purchasing them on the internet or when travelling abroad. A warning that also holds valid for Europeans.
