Healthy chickens make for healthy eating

[9 July 2008 - 10h11]

Industrially farmed chickens are not at all healthy. According to a team of British researchers, the so-called “standard” chickens raised in tiny spaces have serious problems moving around and are alarmingly thin.

These are the findings reached by Dr Toby Knowles of Bristol University, after studying 51,000 chickens over the course of 40 days. A number of aspects were taken into account, including the breed, the feed the were given and their behaviour.

The results show that 27% of these birds were hampered in their movement. And 3% were virtually unable to move around at all. Consequently, they show serious signs of reduced muscle mass. In other words, they are too thin.

The researchers believe that intensive genetic selection over the last 50 years has played a direct role in the general weakening of battery chickens. By opting for increased productivity, chicken farmers have in effect selected a breed that grows as fast as possible, and almost without moving. Which may be good for business.. but is a lot more questionable when it comes to health. These poor creatures don’t even have time build up normal muscle tissue. They have become unhealthy and, what’s more, there’s less flesh on them. All of which is pretty depressing.
