Healthy teeth for a happy smile !
There’s nothing more excruciating than toothache. And nothing worse for spoiling a beautiful face and making you look unhealthy!
But despite all this, the WHO points out that tooth decay is the most common of all human ailments. And probably the most neglected too, even though preventing it is very easy.
Tooth decay is the result of an infection that attacks the enamel, the hard, dense, white substance that covers the crown of our teeth. And what causes it? Poor diet and poor oral hygiene.
Sugar is enemy number one where tooth enamel is concerned. Eating and drinking too many sweet things leads to an excess of acid in the mouth and this allows certain bacteria to develop and attack the surface of the teeth. Saliva is our first line of defence in keeping our teeth healthy. A good intake of calcium and fluoride is also needed to ensure ongoing remineralisation of the enamel. Unfortunately, when we sleep, saliva production slows right down and the natural cleaning process of our teeth no longer takes place.
So it’s very important to brush our teeth at least twice a day, with toothpaste: in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before going to bed. And we should start as early as 3 or 4 years old. Using a fluoride toothpaste is also important as it helps to strengthen tooth enamel, as do dairy products which are rich in calcium.
