In disadvantaged countries, more people die from cancer than from AIDS and TB put together!
[mis à jour le 26 November 2009 à 11h15]
In 2008, more than 5 million people died from cancer in the world’s poorest countries. Once considered to be the prerogative of world’s wealthier societies, cancer – particularly breast and cervical cancer – is now a significant problem in the poor regions of the world. In a recently published report, a group of experts draws attention to this silent epidemic.
The figures are alarming. In developing countries, 255,576 women died from breast cancer in 2008. And cervical cancer is even more deadly: in 2008, it was responsible for 272,238 deaths, ie 85% of all deaths from cervical cancer worldwide.
But at international level, these diseases are not always treated as major public health concerns. As the International Cancer Research Centre points out, in 2008, only 5% of world resources devoted to combating cancer were allocated to developing countries.
