Is obesity more common among psoriasis sufferers?
Does obesity occur more frequently among people who suffer from psoriasis?
A new study conducted in Taiwan has shown an abnormally high level of leptin in such patients. And this hormone is recognised to play a key role in weight control and food intake.
"The 77 psoriasis sufferers who volunteered to take part in our study were at double the risk of obesity, hyperleptinimia and high blood pressure", stated Dr Yi-Ju Chen of Taiwan. "For the first time, this discovery links the chronic inflammation that characterises psoriasis with metabolic disturbances".
To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the medical records of 158 Taiwanese citizens over 2 years. A little under half of them suffered from psoriasis. The others acted as a control group. "If our conclusions are confirmed, losing weight could become an important element in the treatment of psoriasis", the authors state. In a country like France, 2 million people (of whom almost a million don’t get medical help!) are affected by this auto-immune disease. It is characterised by the overly rapid renewal of the epidermis and takes the form of outbreaks and remissions.
