Is the different life expectancy of men and women down to their fathers?
It’s a well-known fact that males live shorter lives than females... among mammals – and therefore among humans – in any case.
According to a Japanese study, this is in fact due to the sperm itself. To reach this conclusion, the researchers used genetic manipulation to “create” mice conceived by mixing the genetic material of two different mothers… and therefore without using sperm. And they found that the rodents born as a result of this manipulation lived much longer than the mice born in the normal way from male and female parents! The difference was significant: no fewer than 186 additional days of life. Which, in terms of an average life expectancy of 700 days is considerable …
Another interesting result is that the mice born from this artificial fertilization were lighter and slimmer than the others. And their immune system appeared to be noticeably more efficient. According to the researchers, these differences seem to be linked to a specific gene found on chromosome 9 of male mice, and in other mammals. Other genes may also be involved.
