Is your nail infected? See a doctor!

Do you have yellow, brown or white marks on one or more of your nails? If so, it’s probably onychomycosis and there’s no point in waiting for it to go away. An infected nail never gets better on its own, so you should turn to a treatment that is known to be effective.
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the bed of the nail and the nail plate”, explains Dr Bruno Fouilloux, a dermatologist at Saint-Etienne. “And when the mycosis spreads, it can develop in other nails, the gaps between the toes or the sole of the foot.”
The best thing to do is to consult a doctor straight away. The quicker you are seen, the quicker you will be treated and the shorter and simpler the treatment will be. “Patients should be concerned as soon as they see a whitish-yellow mark with a tendency to spread on one of their nails.”
However, of the 5 million people in France affected, only a quarter are treated. Which is why Dr Fouilloux stresses the need to consult a doctor. “If a patient delays in consulting, there is a significant risk that the other members of his family – who share the same bathroom – will also become infected. We have seen many cases among adolescents and most of the time it was one of the parents who was carrying the fungal infection.” To find out more, go to http://www.onglesmalades.fr.
