Kevlar® shield protection for healthcare workers
As all healthcare staff who work in A&E are well aware, too often patients or their companions can become violent and potentially dangerous, either under the effect of drugs or pain, or indeed … for no particular reason.
Faced with this recurring problem, a healthcare worker at Limoges University Hospital in France has developed an antiviolence shield made from kevlar®: a very lightweight, tough material used, for example, in the manufacture of bullet-proof vests. When made available to healthcare workers, this shield fulfils three complementary functions: protection, immobilisation and transport aid. Of course it is not a miracle cure but it does represent one of the only ways of responding to such acts of violence in a non-violent way.
The shield itself is a simple square of material measuring 120cm x 120cm, comprising two sheets of kevlar® and can help hospital staff when they need to respond to an act of aggression: an attack with a knife, scissors or an unsheathed scalpel for example. When equipped with this shield, two healthcare workers are able to overcome a violent individual. However, without any special equipment, it requires at least four members of staff.
Once surrounded by the two sheets that form the shield, the aggressor finds himself enclosed from shoulder to knee. And thanks to a system of fast-tightening straps and carrying handles he can then be moved.
