Lack of sleep can have long-term effects on health
Lack of sleep doesn’t just mean feeling sleepy during the day or having problems staying alert … In the longer term, shortage of sleep can affect the body in unexpected ways.
Lack of sleep and daytime drowsiness increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. In the same way that poor quality sleep caused by disorders such as sleep apnoea can also increase this risk.
Some metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, have also been found in very young children. A study published in September 2010 pointed to an increased risk of obesity … among very young children who did not get enough sleep.
Sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of depression. In June 2011, American researchers showed that men who slept less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours a night were more likely to suffer from depression than those who enjoyed an average of 6 to 9 hours sleep a night.
