Living to a ripe old age is good for the health … of your close relatives!

Has someone in your family lived to be a hundred? That could be good news for you. According to American researchers, people in families with relatives who live or who have lived beyond the age of 85 are likely to have a lower than average risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Dr Dellara Terry and her colleagues at Boston University studied a cohort of 1,700 people as part of the Framingham Study. Their results show that “those whose parents live a long time have a more favourable cardiovascular profile than the others”. The researchers believe that “a better understanding of these genetic factors could help in improving prevention and in adapting therapeutic strategies”.
